I'm collecting stories from academic mothers: how you did it, what helped, and what you wish someone had told you. If you'd like to be interviewed, leave your name and email and I'll reach out!
The honest part
What it can cost
There is real research on what having kids costs in academia. In Do Babies Matter?, Mason, Wolfinger, and Goulden found that women who have children early in academia are less likely to end up with tenure than men, or than women without kids.
That doesn't mean you have to wait. It means the system has a cost built in. People do have kids in grad school, as postdocs, and before tenure, and the ones who do it well usually had support, policies, and someone who told them the truth. That's what this page is for!
